Contraceptive Implant (Implanon® NXT) Insertion & Removal

The procedure is performed by our experienced GPs under local anaesthetic in our fully equipped treatment room. Implanon® NXT provides effective contraception for up to 3 years and can be removed at any time if you wish to become pregnant or choose another contraceptive method.

Implanon® NXT Insertion

Insertion is a quick procedure performed under local anaesthetic and usually takes only a few minutes. The implant is inserted beneath the skin of your non-dominant upper arm using a specialised applicator. After the procedure, a small dressing and pressure bandage are applied to minimise bruising. Most patients are able to return to their normal daily activities immediately.

Implanon® NXT Removal

Removal is also performed under local anaesthetic. A small incision is made to gently remove the implant. If you wish to continue using Implanon® NXT, a new implant can usually be inserted during the same appointment. Fertility generally returns quickly once the implant has been removed.

Aftercare

Following insertion or removal:

Keep the dressing clean and dry for 24–48 hours
Leave the pressure bandage in place for 24 hours, unless advised otherwise

Contact your doctor if you develop increasing pain, redness, swelling or discharge
